In A. G. Flitcher’s Wasp Oil, Detective Rosaria Castilla investigates the death of Gary Pine and all the strange happenings that have occurred in the wake of his demise. In the aftermath of Pine’s death, Rosaria and her partner, Oliver, attempt to piece together the bizarre circumstances impacting various members of the public. However, because of the actions and secrets of a man named Frankie Branza—also deceased—Rosaria can’t seem to pin down any of the clues hanging over her head.
As the story progresses, we meet a big cast of characters. Each have rich inner lives that unravel alongside the mystery. Because of the number of characters, those looked for a more grounded read might feel overwhelmed; though, that feeling of overwhelm certainly adds to the horror aspects present in the narrative. From the beginning, the reader gets the sense that nothing in Halburton is as innocent as it appears on the surface. While a few plot points needed a bit more time to develop, by the end the reader feels satisfied by the conclusion of events.
In particular, the inclusion of the true crime radio show—hosted by Wynona Crumpton and Peter Patella—added an interesting perspective to Rosaria’s investigation. I liked how the radio show added another layer to the mystery because the hosts almost exclusively talked about Frankie Branza and his sour dealings with the people of Halburton. It gives the reader a chance to learn about the history of the city’s problems without telling too much. I also enjoyed well Rosaria’s dedication to her job was depicted. She’s often shown working her cases at home, at all hours of the day. Those moments really felt like we got to see a glimpse into Rosaria’s character.
Though a closer copy edit would be beneficial, the prose was clear and engaging. The characters all had unique voices and diverse relationships. There is a fair amount of cursing, so readers who prefer not to read swear words might tread cautiously. Fans of twisty mysteries and horror will enjoy the tone and atmosphere Wasp Oil brings to the table. It has elements of a traditional detective mystery mixed with urban horror. Overall, it’s a unique read for those who want something creepy for the fall season.
